1. German courses for students, staff and their partners / next of kin (min. age 18 years) and graduates

During the winter term 2023/24 the department of International Relations will again offer numerous German courses, which can be attended by all (incoming) students and employees and their next of kin (min. age 18 years). Potential applicants to FH JOANNEUM are also welcome to participate. The course offer includes grammar courses and competence courses (writing and reading, listening and speaking) as well as “Tandem+”. The courses will start at on 26 February 2024 in Graz and Bad Gleichenberg and on 4 March 2024 in Kapfenberg.

The course costs for language courses of 30 units of 45 minutes each (2 SWS) are as follows:

• Students and employees of FH JOANNEUM: free of charge
• Partners / next of kins of FH JOANNEUM students and employees (minimum age 18 years): € 200,-. (€ 350,- for 4 SWS)
• Graduates of FH JOANNEUM: € 200,-. (€ 350,- for 4 SWS)

Campus Graz

I am an incoming student

I have participated in the Orientation Programme and / or I am already staying in Graz

I am beginner WITHOUT any knowledge of the German language: You have never studied German before. You can join the courses German Beginners 1 (A1/1) and Tandem+. You have to register for these courses during the Orientation Programme in February 2024. During registration you have to pay € 19,- for the textbook Miteinander! A1/1. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the price for the book is cheaper than in the bookstore as we buy a lot of them.

I have participated in the German intentensive course: If you passed the German Intensive Course A1/1 you can register for the courses German Beginners 2 (A1/2) and Tandem+. If you did NOT pass the German Intensive Course you can register for the courses German Beginners 1 (A1/1) and Tandem+. For both cases the registration takes place in February 2024 . During registration you have to pay € 19,- for the textbook Miteinander! A1/2. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the price for the book is cheaper than in the bookstore as we buy a lot of them.

I am neither beginner nor have I particpitated in the German intensive course:
If you have already studied German before (even just some lessons) you have to take the placement test on 26 September 2023 in room 101 at 12:00. You will get the results of your test during the course enrolment in February 2024. You can register for as many courses as you want, respecting your level. The course system will be explained by our German team during registration. You can also read the course descriptions. During registration you have to pay € 19,- for our course material. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the purchase of our printed material is mandatory and that any reproduction (e.g. photocopies) is not allowed.

I am an exchange student (already in the last semester/s)

Enrolment for all exchange students, who already assisted to one or more German course/s in the last semester/s, will take place ONLY online at https://forms.fh-joanneum.at/int/german-courses-students-staff-fhj/ from 12-22 February 2024 . If you passed the exam of the courses in the last semester, you can join the follow-up courses (e.g. Beginner 3 (A2/1) in the winter term, Beginner 4 (A2/2) in the summer term). All courses are free of charge (except applicants), yet a small fee of € 19,00,- per course will be charged for teaching materials and / or the textbook. I am a degree seeking student or a partner of a degree seeking student at FH JOANNEUM

Enrolment will take place ONLY online at https://forms.fh-joanneum.at/int/german-courses-students-staff-fhj/ from 12-22 February 2024. All courses are free of charge (except applicants), yet a small fee of € 19,00,- per course will be charged for teaching materials and / or the textbook. I am a staff member or a partner of a staff member at FH JOANNEUM

Registration takes place ONLY online at https://forms.fh-joanneum.at/int/german-courses-students-staff-fhj/ from 12-22 February 2024.

General notes

• Two weeks into the course it is no longer possible to change.
• If there are parallel courses it is not possible at all to change the group in the same level.
• If you don’t come to your registered course in the first two weeks, your registration expires and someone on the waiting list can take your place
• All German semester courses are ECTS courses which means that you get credits for them. Therefore you have to be present at least 80% of the time and pass all exams if you want to get them. An exception are non GPB students who have timetable clashes with their study programme(s). An extra work has to be done though. If you don’t need credits, please contact your teacher.

The courses in Graz will start on 26 February 2024!

Campus Kapfenberg

Regular students, staff and their partners

In the winter semester 2022, the International Relations Department offers two German courses as well as Tandem+ in Kapfenberg. The offer depends on the number of participants and will be announced on Welcome Day:

• Tandem+ 2 ECTS, 8 weeks / 2 hours

You can register to all courses personally per E-Mail silke.glatzer@fh-joanneum.at until 26 February 2024 or personally at the Welcome Day. Please note, that places are limited (first come, first served …).

The presentation of the German Course programme and Placement test will take place at the Welcome Day for incoming students in Kapfenberg.
Courses in Kapfenberg start on 4 March 2024.

General notes

All courses are free of charge and ECTS courses. € 19,00,- have to be paid for the course book or the course material. All students in Kapfenberg can also join all courses in Graz, if the course is not available in Kapfenberg or if there are time clashes with other courses in Kapfenberg. It is not allowed to choose an equal course (e.g. Grundstufe 1 (A1/1) in Kapfenberg and Graz!!! If you have questions regarding the guidelines or general questions concerning German as a Foreign language in Kapfenberg please contact silke.glatzer@fh-joanneum.at.

Campus Bad Gleichenberg

Regular students, staff and their partners

Registration for all courses in Bad Gleichenberg for the above-mentioned target groups must be made by 26 February 2024 at Namet or directly on the Welcome Day. The number of course places is limited. On the Welcome Day in Bad Gleichenberg, the placement test will also be conducted and the German programme will be briefly presented.

2. German courses for refugees:

If you wish to attend the German courses at FH JOANNEUM you must provide evidence that you have been enrolled in a university or another institute of tertiary education equivalent to the Austrian education system in your home country during the online registration process (upload of documents). You will get a notification after the registration process with a link to the mandatory placement test. After the registration and having completed the test your qualifications will be assessed through a mandatory interview (invitation by e-mail).

Please note that places in a German course are subject to availability. You will be informed about the final acceptance by e-mail.

Your registration is complete after the online registration for the specific German courses upon inviation e-mail.

3. German courses for external participants (minimum age 18).

If you are interested in one of our German courses, please contact daf@fh-joanneum.at. We will be happy to advise you.

The course costs for language courses of 30 units of 45 minutes each (2 SWS) are € 230,-, of 60 units of 45 minutes each (4 SWS) € 380,-, for an Intensive German Course (60 units of 45 minutes each, 4 SWS) € 350,-.

4. “German Language Competence Course” for applicants

The German Language Competence Course prepares non-native speakers of German for studying at FH JOANNEUM. Applicants must demonstrate a German proficiency level of at least A2. You will complete the course with a certificate and the ÖSD examination “Zertifikat Deutsch B2“. You thus fulfil the language requirements for most Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.

We are committed to your linguistic development at an academic level, but we also want to familiarise you with your future university during the Certificate Programme. This means intensive contact with your course of choice, while also getting to know all of the relevant university services which are on hand to support you during your studies.
